Did you do your rehab?- September 2, 2020

Hey everyone!  Sorry for the longer post, but after FOUR EXTRA days of class talking about rehab I have LOTS to say. I LOVED every second!!  Some of you may be thinking, “but you are a chiropractic student?  I am confused. I thought you just adjust and massage patients?”

Myth: chiropractors can ONLY adjust (and massage.) Why is this an idea? Much of the chiropractic profession chooses to only do these things and therefore it is not general knowledge that we can do sooooo much more.

Truth: Chiropractors have a very wide scope of practice and can ABSOLUTELY perform rehab for their patients. It is an important part of the healing process for most patients and is HIGHLY underutilized.

Now how many times have you been injured, told to rehab by your doctor, and done about 1/10th of it?  This is so common. Part of this is because pain usually disappears earlier on in the rehab and the importance of continuing rehab to full recovery is not stressed. Healing takes, at the LEAST, about 6 weeks, let alone for major injuries. Without proper rehab, your body can fall into bad habits to avoid that pain or new dysfunction and injure other areas over time. If I told you- “that ankle sprain, without proper rehab, could become future back pain and maybe even future surgery or disability due to back pain,” would that encourage you to do rehab, or run away on that sprained ankle?  I think providing little chunks of information, like this, helps people understand what they can do to help themselves. DO YOUR REHAB is the message here. 😊

Now I’d like to add a little of the science that I learned this week. Each joint in your body needs 2 basic things. Mobility and stability. In order words, it needs to move correctly in all the directions it is supposed to, but needs to move in a controlled manner within those ranges. For the physical therapists (or students) out there: you are AMAZING at creating that stability. For the chiropractors (or students) out there: you are AMAZING at creating that mobility. So why do some people go to a physical therapist or a chiropractor and it “fails” them? They probably needed mobility not stability or vice versa and went to the person who did the opposite!!  THAT is part of my goal for the future: to properly identify where and when patients need stability or mobility and apply that correctly using rehab. I believe this is the future of chiropractic: to find that middle ground and apply the correct rehab, adjustments, and soft tissue work for patients when and where they need them. I cannot wait to help you all in the future and show you the results this focused care can give.

I hope you all learned something about rehab and see my passion to help make ya’ll better by applying these concepts!!  If you want to know more, message me!  If you have questions, message me!  If you want to hear about something completely different, message me!  I can’t wait to hear from you 😊
